I've had them for about an hour now, and have been very impressed with what I hear. The Series 5 is supposedly the least bassy signature of the TFZs, but they're still very impactful and powerful while remaining listenable. The tone is pretty warm with a downwards slope, treble rolling off somewhat gracefully if I'd say. Some have stated that still, the 5 is a bit too bassy for their preferences -- in fact, there's already a modification floating around for these. By sticking a needle in the bass vent and puncturing the thin film in there, it reduces the bass by a slight amount -- just right in quantity.
Take a look at the uncompensated graphs of the modded, and unmodded TFZ Series 5. credits to stratocaster.
The bass is very deep. A member of the Discord has stated that he's happy because the bass extends further and deeper than his Shure SE215. The impact is very robust and comes with a lot of body -- the low end of electronic tracks is filled out quite well. I'd imagine it could seem a bit congested on certain tracks, but I haven't experienced this yet. I wouldn’t say it’s the fastest or tightest bass I’ve heard, but it’s definitely more refined and detailed than my M6 Pro.
Vocals are very smooth and lush, but might give the impression of being veiled upon first listen. However, my ears adapted very quickly (almost frighteningly so) and it was very, very enjoyable. I would prefer the vocals to be clear and clean rather than smooth, but this is probably a preference thing. I'd say it's pretty similar to my experience with the ASG-1PLUS -- and people love vocals on that IEM.
Highs start sloping off after 5k, though this was expected. This bump gives a slight sparkle to the highs that make the Series 5 listenable. Songs are given a good amount of energy and excitement from this, though the overall sig is more v-shaped towards the bass side. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be a huge sense of “air”, or “transients” (supposedly caused by FR extending above human hearing). Because of this, the TFZ S5 does not excel in clarity or detail. Some may feel the signature is congested if they’re coming from a brighter, more transparent signature. I think it does sound a bit closed in, but for a workout IEM its other qualities make up for it. Luckily, as I planned to make these my new gym IEMs, the treble is certainly less peaky and more even than my Mee M6 Pro.
As for build quality, design, and comfort, it’s a mixed bag. I don’t want to talk about this section so much because it doesn’t make as big of an impact on the product as sound IMO. The build quality feels very solid and I don’t have any qualms about it. Design and shape is a plus in my book -- they’re smaller than the pictures make them seem, meaning the comfort is very good. However, the cable is pretty shitty overall. The connection point to the actual IEM seems weak and flimsy; the cable material itself is made of that rubbery, grippy texture that will catch on a lot of clothings and stuff. Hopefully I’ll figure out how to install a 2-pin connection in there!
I personally feel that the TFZ Series 5 is a strong contender in its price bracket. These are kick-ass for electronic genres. I’d wholeheartedly take these over the Mee Pinnacle P1 for gym usage -- in my opinion, their signatures are very similar, but the TFZ is more fun and exciting. The TFZ takes the cake with more pronunciation of subbass, and doesn’t lack energy in the treble that I felt the P1 did. Mids on the P1 should be a little cleaner and refined, as well as feeling more spacious / airy (probably a better all-rounder for multiple genres). These are a very fun sounding headphone, with some stellar qualities you wouldn’t find in most consumer-level phones. Overall, I'd say the weakest aspect of the TFZ 5s is the clarity and sense of spaciousness, in which it makes up for with musicality. For $79, I think they’re great for the price if you can deal with the slightly protruding fitment and shitty cable.
